Falls Festival Issues Warning About “Dangerous Orange Pill”
Falls Festival organisers have issued a red alert about a “dangerous orange pill” doing the rounds on the street.
Taking to Facebook, they passed on a warning from medics about the deadly drug, which is currently “in circulation across Australia”.
They also urged punters to steer clear of any illicits at Falls this summer, reminding us that “one pill can kill”.
“Although we’ve had a safe Falls Festival to date, our medical teams have alerted us to a dangerous orange pill that is currently in circulation across Australia,” organisers report.
“Regardless of pill variation, we want to remind everyone of the potentially fatal risks that come with illicit substances. You do not know what is in them, how your body will react, there is no safe level of consumption.
“One pill can kill.”
They also used the occasion to remind punters of the steps to follow in the event of an emergency at any of the festival legs.
“We also want to reiterate if you or any of your friends are feeling unwell or concerned for your health please seek medical attention immediately. The event and medical teams are here to help you without judgement,” they continue.
“If you see anyone in trouble, please alert event staff immediately or call the Patron Safety Hotline to report. We also encourage you to dispose of any drugs safely. We want all of you to have a great time and enjoy a safe festival experience.”
Falls Fest is currently underway in Lorne and Marion Bay, before it heads to Byron Bay and Fremantle over the coming days (catch the set times here).
ICYMI: this year’s Falls Festival lineup is topped by the likes of Anderson .Paak, Interpol, CHVRCHES, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Dizzee Rascal and Cut Copy, as well as ‘Africa’ legends Toto, who we’re hoping might have a sneaky collaboration up their sleeve.
Organisers’ drug warning comes after tragedy struck at the Central Coast’s New Years-straddling Lost Paradise Festival on Saturday night, with a 22-year-old man dead and two other people hospitalised after taking an “unknown substance”.
A police investigation into the death is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the national campaign for drug law reform Take Control has responded to the tragedy by once again pleading with the NSW liberal government to make music festivals safer by reconsidering their staunch opposition to pill-testing.
“This doesn’t need to be the summer of festival deaths,” Ted Noffs Foundation CEO and campaign spokesperson Matt Noffs said.
Take Control are urging to sign an open letter to Premier Gladys Berejiklian, essentially begging her to listen to the evidence and reconsider trialling life-saving pill-testing measures at NSW festivals.

Police Say Punters Tried To Sneak Drugs Into Lost Paradise Festival Inside The Stuffing Of A BBQ Chook
Police conducting a drug dog operation at the Central Coast’s Lost Paradise Festival say punters are becoming more “sophisticated” with their drug smuggling techniques.
Speaking with the ABC, Acting Superintendent Rod Peet has described some of the bizarre lengths that some attendees have gone to this year in a bid to keep their pills under sniffer dogs’ noses, including one innovative individual who decided to stuff them inside a BBQ chook (but still ended up getting caught).
“People aren’t carrying it in their pockets — they aren’t that careless — they are quite calculated in the way they are secreting things,” Peet said.
“On one instance, certainly someone was quite determined, someone inserted drugs into the stuffing of a barbecue chicken.”
Some punters also used a Vegemite jar with a secret compartment to try to mask their stash, while the cops have also found modified aerosol cans filled with more illicit substances.
“I commend my police on their tenacity to search that thoroughly. That is the extent we’re going to to insulate this event from drug use,” Peet said.
His words come after a 22-year-old Queensland man tragically died following a suspected overdose at the festival on Saturday night
So far, police have slapped 50 people with Field Court Attendance Notices for drug possession, and another seven with cannabis cautions.
An additional three people have been charged with drug supply offences, including a 21-year-old man from Drummoyne who was allegedly found with 105 MDMA pills, and a 23-year-old man from Elanora Heights who was allegedly caught with 80 MDMA pills and 65 bags of cocaine.
An investigation into the man’s death is ongoing, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
Meanwhile, the national campaign for drug law reform Take Control has responded to the tragedy by once again pleading with the NSW liberal government to make music festivals safer by reconsidering their staunch opposition to pill-testing.
“This doesn’t need to be the summer of festival deaths,” Ted Noffs Foundation CEO and campaign spokesperson Matt Noffs said, noting that the Lost Paradise tragedy marked the second potentially avoidable drug fatality at a NSW music event in less than a month.
Take Control are urging to sign an open letter to Premier Gladys Berejiklian, essentially begging her to listen to the evidence and reconsider trialling life-saving pill-testing measures at NSW festivals.

Sign This Open Letter If You Want The NSW Government To Get Their Sh*t Together On Pill-Testing
The national campaign for drug law reform, Take Control, is pleading with the NSW Government to make music festivals safer by reconsidering their staunch opposition to pill-testing, following yet another tragedy this weekend.
A young man died and two other people have been hospitalised after taking an “unknown substance” at the Central Coast’s Lost Paradise Festival on Saturday, marking the second fatal overdose at a NSW festival in less than a month.
“This doesn’t need to be the summer of festival deaths,” Ted Noffs Foundation CEO and campaign spokesperson Matt Noffs says in a statement. “We have doctors and drug treatment experts standing by to make live music and festivals safer for our kids with pill testing.”
The organisation is urging punters to sign an open letter urging NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian to stop playing politics with young lives.
“Please Premier – this is not the time to blinding follow the ‘just say no’ failed strategy,” he begs. “Please at least listen to the evidence and come to the table so that we can make music festivals safer.”
His statement continues:
“Young people can get drugs easily, but don’t know what they are taking. In responding to tragedy we must sometimes face hard truths. Decades of a punitive approach where we arrest young people has not worked. It is time to take practical steps to make parties safer for our kids.
The NSW Government is already halfway there – supporting a range of harm minimisation measures. It makes sense to extend this to a proven service that will make our kids safer at music festivals.
We’ve said it time and time again: despite dealers being caught every day, more simply replace them. Lives are being ruined with severe charges for possession. Worst of all, it’s hard for people with problems to get help because they’re treated like criminals.
Pill testing is not a silver bullet but it’s a excellent way to help prevent this kind of tragedy and has majority support from Australians.”
It comes after a teen died of an overdose at a Sydney dance music event just a few weeks ago.
Take Control’s calls for drug policy reform fell on deaf ears after that tragedy, with Premier Berejiklian quick to hose down any talk of changing the NSW Government’s mind on pill-testing.
“Unfortunately, we know that pill testing won’t work because it’ll give people a green light to taking substances, which in the end could still kill them,” she said at the time.
Gladys also previously vowed to shut down the Defqon.1 dance festival after two people died and three more were hospitalised in a critical condition following the Sydney event earlier this year.
Blaming the event itself for the tragedy, she claimed that anyone advocating for pill testing as a solution to help stop fatal overdoses was “giving the green light to drugs”.
However, her statements have been proven categorically false by ABC Fact Checkers , with RMIT researchers previously demonstrating that the conservative catch-cry that pill-testing leads to more deaths is complete BS.
“There is no evidence that pill-testing results in festival attendees and partygoers taking more drugs and dying as a consequence,” researcher Claudia Long says. “There is evidence to suggest that pill-testing can make some users more likely to dispose of their drugs or take smaller quantities of them.”
And we certainly saw these findings in action earlier this year when Australia’s first pill-testing facility was trialled at Groovin The Moo Canberra.
While the landmark trial came back with some disturbing details about some of the 83 drugs tested, the upshot of those results was that many of the punters who owned the bad drugs decided to bin them rather than risk their lives, causing many commentators to hail the whole thing a big success.
To sign Take Control’s open letter to the Premier, which essentially begs her to listen to the evidence and reconsider trialling life-saving pill-testing measures at local festivals, head here.

One Dead, Two Hospitalised After Taking “Unknown Substance” At Lost Paradise Festival
Tragedy has struck at Lost Paradise Festival on the NSW Central Coast, where a young man has died and two other people have been hospitalised after ingesting an “unknown substance”.
A 22-year-old man from Queensland was rushed to Gosford Hospital at around 8pm on Saturday but died a short time later, while a man and a woman are reportedly still there in a stable condition.
“This is a very distressing incident and our sincerest thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased,” festival organisers said in a statement to Music Feeds.
“The matter is the subject of a police investigation and we will continue to cooperate and provide whatever assistance we can.”
Their statement continues:
“Lost Paradise is a strictly drug-free event that is about celebrating life, love and nature in a fun, safe and welcoming environment.
“A great deal of planning and effort goes into ensuring the safety and welfare of our festival-goers and event staff. We work closely with local police to try to ensure festival-goers respect our drug free policy and NSW Ambulance to provide extensive medical support across the festival site.
This year, we have also engaged DanceWize NSW, a NUAA program that is funded by the NSW Ministry of Health to educate people on the implications of drug use, and offer peer support and health resources.”
But police reckon there will now be “ramifications” for the festival, despite their best efforts to safeguard punters’ welfare.
“It’s a tragic event and there will be ramifications, one way or another, for the credibility of the event,” Acting Superintendent Rod Peet tells the ABC.
An estimated crowd of 11,000 are currently attending the camping festival in Glenworth Valley, which kicked off on Friday and runs til New Years Day with performances from the likes of Joey Bada$$, Peking Duk, Tash Sultana, M.I.A., The Kooks, Pnau and more.
Police conducting a drug dog operation have so far slapped 50 people with Field Court Attendance Notices for drug possession and another seven with cannabis cautions.
An additional three people have been charged with drug supply offences, including a 21-year-old man from Drummoyne who was allegedly found with 105 MDMA pills, and a 23-year-old man from Elanora Heights who was allegedly caught with 80 MDMA pills and six bags of cocaine.
