King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Drop Fifth & Final Album Of 2017, ‘Gumboot Soup’

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have made good on their pledge to release five albums this year, dropping their fifth and final LP on the last day of 2017.

Dubbed Gumboot Soup, the fresh disc follows the year’s previous releases Flying Microtonal Banana, Murder of the Universe, Sketches of Brunswick East and Polygondwanaland.

“The fifth record is this place for us to put a lot of different ideas that we’re trying to experiment within the song, rather than within the whole record,” frontman Stu Mackenzie told Consequence Of Sound earlier in the year. “And for me, some of my favourite songs of the year are on the fifth record. It’s more song-oriented than album-oriented. But things are still possible to change.”

The Melbourne psych-lords preempted the final round of musical machine gun fire with singles like ‘Greenhouse Heat Death’, ‘Beginner’s Luck’ and ‘All Is Known’, which can all be heard in the context of the new LP, streaming in full via Bandcamp below.

Give it a spin, and brace yourself for whatever madness King Gizz have in store for 2018.

PSA: Sydney Lockout Laws Will Be Lifted Tonight For New Year’s Eve

Congrats, Sydney! In honour of 2017 coming to a close, the state government is giving us a celebratory night off from the lockout laws.

Yes, for one glorious night only, Sydney will become a lockout-free zone, with our supreme Liberal Party overlords declaring it OK for us to stay out and play past 1.30am to toast the arrival of the New Year.

Anti-lockouts group-turned-political party Keep Sydney Open confirmed the news on Facebook, remarking that “People have been asking us about lockouts and closing times tonight, as there hasn’t been much word going round”.

“As NYE is on a Sunday, venues that usually have to close earlier can trade until 2am and the 1:30am lockout ~will not~ apply. Venues that are licensed to stay open later will trade as usual,” they continue.

“Bottle shops that usually have to close earlier on a Sunday can stay trading until 11pm.”

They cheekily added: “Enjoy the one night of the year the NSW Government allows you to party lockout-free!” followed by a string of laughing and angry-snorting emojis.

Of course, it’s not the first time that the NSW Government has given us a night off the lockouts for New Years.

They were originally a bit more public about it though. Speaking in 2014, then-Liquor and Hospitality Minister Troy Grant called the lockout relaxation “a commonsense approach for what is the biggest night on the Sydney calendar” based on the logic that it would prevent punters from dangerously bull-rushing to venues following the midnight fireworks display in an attempt to beat the lockouts.

It still seems a bit odd though, given the laws were originally introduced following a moral panic over the fatal assault of 18-year-old Daniel Christie, which occurred in Kings Cross in 2013, on noneother than New Year’s Eve.

Oh well. Happy New Years at any rate, all. Have fun, be safe, and enjoy the one night of the year you don’t have to slide like Indiana Jones through a falling rock door to get into a venue before the stroke of 1.30am.

International Act Pulls Out Of Field Day 2018, Two Replacements Announced

Field Day has lost one of its international acts but swiftly gained a new one. Plus another local act to boot!

US rapper Princess Nokia has pulled the plug on her appearance at the Sydney New Year’s Day Festival, with promoters assuring fans that the ‘Kitana’, ‘Brujas’ and ‘Tomboy’ tunesmith is spewing to have to cancel last minute due to “severe Tonsillitis”.

“She is devastated that she isn’t able to perform for her Australian fans,” they explain.

“As you can imagine we’re all upset with this news. However, our touring department have been working around the clock to resolve this and we’re very impressed with what they have achieved. Especially so close to the event.”

Yep, thanks to some ~quick maths~ they’ve managed to pull in a bloody ‘uge last minute replacement for Princess Nokia in the form of…

Man’s Not Hot himself Big Shaq.

And as well as the joke-rapping grimelord, organisers have also added local legend Running Touch to proceedings.

Naturally, this has fucked with the set times a fair bit.

You can catch the new timetable, alongside the newly updated lineup (which still features the likes of Flume, Vince Staples, ScHoolboy Q, George Maple & more) below.

Two Young Women Allegedly Sexually Assaulted At Falls Festival Marion Bay

Tasmanian Police are investigating after two young female punters were reportedly sexually assaulted at Falls Festival‘s Marion Bay leg.

The first woman, aged 19, claims she was assaulted by an ‘unknown male’ in the main stage mosh pit while watching The Jungle Giants‘ set at around 9.30pm on Friday night.

The cops are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly two women who helped the victim leave the mosh pit after she was attacked.

Addressing the incident on Facebook, police said: “The key message here is that although the mosh pit itself is designed for close contact, any form of touching without the other person’s consent is not OK”.

Meanwhile, a second young woman has also come forward, alleging that she was sexually assaulted in the Marion Bay festival’s camping area on Saturday night.

“The young female victim was provided with support however decided she did not wish for police to formally investigate the matter,” authorities say. “Although ultimately her choice, elements of the incident will still be followed up by investigators.”

Both police and Falls organisers have condemned the behaviour in a joint statement “urging those joining the mosh pit to stay with friends and if you become isolated or feel unsafe at any time to seek assistance from the nearest Police Officer or Event Security”.

“We want patrons to feel safe and enjoy the event so we urge anyone witnessing this kind behaviour to report it immediately”, their statement reads.

“Although it is disappointing these incidents are taking place, police are encouraged by those who have been affected in coming forward with information about this behaviour.

“The key messages remain the same – sexual assault including touching without consent is a serious matter.”

The incidents come after last year’s Falls Fest was marred by a number of reported sexual assaults, including an alleged rape in the Marion Bay camping area.

This year, stickers reading “enjoy the festival, don’t assault anyone” have been handed out around the festival grounds.

Hopefully that message starts to get through.
